Asia's volcanoes, the Earth's most active
The pros and cons of living in the Pacific's Fire Belt.
With dozens of active volcanoes that could erupt at any moment, volcanoes are part and parcel of the lives of the people of Indonesia. Located in the Pacific's Fire Belt, Indonesia's volcanoes are chiefly explosive and destructive. Every year, eruptions play havoc with human lives.
Indonesians have to live with the fear of eruptions, and the evacuations they cause, but they also benefit from some positive effects, because volcanoes can also be a source of economic wealth. The talk will home in on the benefits, such as much more fertile soil - which can produce good harvests - or the development of tourism and geothermal energy.
