Natural threats to populations in the East Africa Rift

Natural threats to populations in the East Africa Rift

The reality of living with the effects of the active volcanoes Nyiragongo and Nyamulagira.

Researcher and geochemist Charles Balagizi will be explaining the natural threats to populations in the East Africa Rift (Democratic Republic of the Congo), where two million people are exposed to the threat of eruption of the Nyiragongo and Nyamulagira volcanoes, and explosions of gases dissolved in Lake Kivu.

The talk by the leading expert on volcanoes in this part of Africa will also address other local threats such as the high levels of CO2 in certain residential areas, pollution of groundwater and rainwater by volcanic material, poor air quality and acid rain.
