Geologist heading up the UNESCO World Geopark Lanzarote and Archipelago Chinijo
This geologist, with a well-stocked CV, homed in on the natural environment in Lanzarote and succeeded in obtaining protection from UNESCO.
Elena Mateo managed Lanzarote's protected areas for over 20 years. In 2013 she headed up work on the candidature to turn the Lanzarote and Archipelago Chinijo territory into a Geopark, and this was achieved in 2015. Since then she has formed part of the Geopark management team.
Her activities as manager of the space include the organisation of congresses and conferences, design and implementation of action to preserve geosites, and the design and implementation of activities to showcase geological heritage, for schools and also for the public at large.
